Warid Telecom up for sale: sources

Karachi, 27th June, 2013 - Pakistan mobile operator Warid Telecom has been put up for sale by its Abu Dhabi owners and it is said to have drawn interest from China Mobile and Etisalat, according to various sources.
The Abu Dhabi Group, a conglomerate led by a ruling family member in the oil-rich emirate, is seeking to sell all 100-per cent of shares in Warid Telecom, two sources revealed speaking on condition of anonymity.
The third source, however, said the company would also be prepared to sell a smaller controlling stake.
Pakistan's mobile telecommunications sector has five operators and is ripe for consolidation after a period when a troubled economy, with increasingly high levels of market penetration and stiff competition has forced companies' margins lower.
The sellers have mandated US investment bank Lazard and British lender Standard Chartered as advisers for the process, the sources said. One estimated a sale could fetch about $1 billion. Walid Irshaid, the chief executive of Pakistan Telecommunications (PTCL), a unit of United Arab Emirates-based Etisalat, said the company is weighing a potential bid.
"We are interested to see if it makes sense for us, but it's not only us. Warid is an existing operator that has been here for many years and so we're saying 'let's look at the prospects,'" he said.
"There are too many players in Pakistan. Margins have eroded for everybody and the market must consolidate - we're all operating under low margins and low ARPU (average revenue per user) and that isn't long-term sustainable."
Warid Telecom declined to comment. China Mobile, which has increased its subscriber base by nearly three-quarters since 2010-11 and operates under the Zong brand, was not immediately for comment.
ETISALAT
According to a source placed within Warid Pakistan this deal has been on the table for months and has almost come to a close in favour of Etisalat.

"They want to keep it in the family, and are somehow related or very closely knit to Etisalat. The deal is over 51 percent of the company not 100 percent as rumored. China Mobile may be interested but it ends there for them”
Employees allegedly believe that the deal is in the best interest of the company since business has been suffering.
Etisalat bought 26 per cent shareholding along with management control of PTCL in June 2005 for US$2.6 billion.
There was an issue of $800 million that Etisalat had held back due to a dispute over property ownership, drawing attention from the finance minister and prime minister of the time.
SHRINKAGE
Warid launched its cellular services in Pakistan in May 2005 and had 12.54 million subscribers at the end of March of this year, down from 17.39 million in 2010-11, making the company the country's smallest operator.
Pakistan's total subscriber base rose 12.2 per cent to 122.1 million over the same period, meaning Warid's market share fell to 10.3 per cent from 16 per cent.
The other operators in Pakistan are Oslo-based Telenor and Orascom Telecom, which operates under the name Mobilink and is the sector leader.
Neither was immediately available for comment.
PTCL's mobile business is under the Ufone brand, while it has a 95 per cent share of the country's fixed line subscribers.
"The board (Warid Telecom) has been looking for a business partner to add value to Warid," a second source familiar with the matter said, adding China Mobile and Etisalat had both expressed interest in acquiring the company.
In 2007, Singapore Telcommunications bought a 30-per cent stake in Warid for about $758 million. That stake purchase gave Warid Telecom an enterprise value of about $2.5 billion.
SingTel sold back that stake in January for $150 million and a right to receive 7.5 per cent of the net proceeds from any future sale, public offering or merger of Warid.
The Abu Dhabi conglomerate also agreed to sell Warid Telecom's Uganda business to Bharti Airtel in April without revealing the financial details of the transaction.
Bharti recently agreed to buy the remaining 30 per cent in Warid Telecom Bangladesh after taking a 70 per cent stake in that business in 2010.
The Abu Dhabi Group, led by ruling family member Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak al-Nahayan, invests in emerging markets and also has large investments in Pakistan including Bank Alfalah Ltd, Al Razi Healthcare and Wateen Telecom.

How To: Keep your computer Healthy

Any technology has its own baggage of problems, and computers are no different. This article will guide you how to keep your desktop or laptop working at its optimal performance.
Installing an Antivirus
The most important software to install is an anti-virus. There is a large selection of free and paid options available to choose from. Antivirus software provides protection from a multitude of threats, such as viruses, trojans, worms, spyware, malware and adware among others.
The best free options are AVG, Avast and Avira. By far the best paid option is Norton. Other paid options include Kaspersky, Trend Micro and Bit Defender. Paid versions do provide a higher security level.
After installing an antivirus, it is important to schedule automated maintenance and to update the virus definitions on a regular basis, although most programs will do these actions automatically.
Another important point to remember when you use CDs, DVDs, programs, USBs and external hard drives, is to scan them first with the anti-virus installed on your system.
Disk Cleanup Utility
The Disk Cleanup Utility is a very helpful tool, as it removes all Windows temporary files from the hard drive. Over a period of time, these temporary files increase in size and slow down the system considerably.
The process to clean up your system using the tool is explained below:
  • Open ‘My Computer’ from the Start menu.
  • Right-click on the icon labelled ‘C Drive’ (or whichever drive on which the system files are installed).
  • Select ‘Properties’ from the pull-down menu. The Disk Cleanup dialog box will open.
  • Check every option located in the "Files to delete:" menu box and click "OK."
  • The process may take a few minutes (1-5 minutes) and you will receive a prompt when the cleaning process has been completed.
Recommended to be done once a week.
Disk Defragmenter Utility
Often Windows divides file information into pieces and stores them in separate physical locations on the hard drive. This process is called fragmentation.
In order for the computer to use a file, Windows searches for the pieces of the file and puts them back together, which tends to slow down the hard drive.
The Disk Defragmenter is a utility that re-organizes the data on the hard drive and improves performance. To use this utility, simply go to 'Start Menu’, then 'Accessories’, and finally 'System Tools’, where the Disk Defragmenter program is.
Remember to keep the computer idle when this utility is being run. Ideally use this utility once a month. It should take about an hour to complete.
Keeping the computer up-to-date
To keep your computer working at optimal levels, it is important to keep the software updated. The latest drivers and firmware need to be downloaded, and these are easily accessible.
They can be found and downloaded from the manufacturer's website, or from Windows Update; Drivereasy and File Hippo's Update checker can simplify the process of checking for updates.
Create backups
Creating backups for your computer can save you from a lot of grief. Windows users can use the ‘System Restore’ feature to schedule automated and periodic backups.
To perform ‘System Restore’, type it in the search field located below the Programs menu, and double click on system restore. Follow the instructions provided to schedule an automated full-system backup.
Check authenticity before installing
Before downloading and installing any software, it’s important to check the software for any viruses, spyware, malware and adware.
The best way to avoid harmful software is to download software from trusted sites. Even if you use torrents, only use trusted sites.
Some quick tips for hardware/software
  • When uninstalling a program, which is usually done via control panel, try to use software removal tools, since some files are not always deleted using the default control panel option. Revo uninstaller serves the purpose well.
  • Keep magnets away from your hard drives! They can corrupt the data on your hard drives.
  • Try and clean your desktop on a regular basis. Dust is a major problem in our country and will harm the hardware over a period of time. Tutorials exist online which can help you clean the desktop. The cooling fan needs to be dust free so that its performance is not affected.
  • For laptops, use cotton swabs to clean the keyboard. The best way is to dab the cotton swab with an alcohol-based solution and gently wipe the keyboard.
  • Desktop keyboards and mouses also need to be cleaned on a regular basis or they will eventually stop working. Always disconnect the keyboard and mouse before cleaning. To clean the keyboard, just flip it over and gently shake it up and down and sideways. Finish off with compressed air and cotton swabs.
  • To clean laptop or monitor screens, it’s best to use micro fibre cloth. Soft tissues can also be used. I usually apply some Glint, and clean the screens. This will help in removing any and all dirt, dust and fingerprints. Screen protectors can also be used to save the screens from dust.
A lot of people, including myself, have faced the loss of data since we did not take care of our computers. If we keep everything up-to-date, make regular backups and use genuine software, we can minimise the losses suffered and have our systems in good working condition.

When the Sunday morning tide goes out, Donnelly cycles down to the beach below New Brighton pier, and with a rake and stick for paintbrushes, sets about transferring what is in his imagination onto the sand. The fact that each piece is so short-lived is part of what makes them special.Elaborate patterns integrate seamlessly with more recognisable forms as Donnelly's works come to life beneath his dancing feet and the deft movements of rake and stick. Crowds of people look on – bemused, wondering, excited – and Donnelly continues with his dance.

Tips for Weight Loss

Excellence of Ṣalāt-‘Alan-Nabī ﷺ
The Noble Prophet said, ‘Remembrance of Allah
in abundance and invocation of Ṣalāt upon me eradicate the poverty (i.e. deprivation).’  (Al-Qaul-ul-Badī, pp. 273; M’arifat-us-Ṣaḥābaĥ-li-Abī Na’īm, vol. 2, pp. 520)
One who intends to overcome obesity, the worst hurdle for him in execution of this objective is his own voraciousNafs (lower self)  who  deceives  with  the  false  intimidation  of  weakness.  As
per  reaction  of  such  fallacy,  for  the  gluttonous  who  is  already provoked  by over  eating  will  indulge  in  more  eating,  will  gulp
down  food  in  large  amounts,  put  on  weight  and  consequently will be trapped in severe diseases. However, it is a Madanī request
that if you are overweight and you are serious to reduce it with a subsequent  intention  to  get  more  vigor  to  fulfill  your  prayers, then few narrations are quoted below to strengthen the will that
you have made. Now after self-motivation, when you have planned
to normalize your overweight for the sake of harvesting the fruits of this world and Hereafter, read the further lineswith prayer to Almighty Allah
beseeching his favors in this context; (tips
to overcome obesity will follow these parables)
Allah likes the slim and less eating servant
It gives a very bad impression to the people that one eats a lot, puts on weight and walks the streets having a paunch hanging. Take care of your weight, as keeping the body healthy with intent to gain strength in execution of worship and keeping the weight normal,  cause  bounties  of  the  Hereafter.  In  addition,  shedding weight with the fear of Allah
pertains to blessing in itself. It is a saying of the Great Prophet likes the most to a bondman who eats less and is slim (low in weight) physically.’ (Al-Jāmi’-uṣ-Ṣaghīr-lis-Suyūṭī, pp. 20, Ḥadīš 221)
Allah dislikes a fat person For goodness’ sake, have pity on you. Believe that the obesity is a
heinous disease in its own self; in fact it is aggregate of many diseases. Obesity is an obstacle in so many good deeds. In the context of the most important and adverse consequence of the
obesity, Amīr-ul-Muminīn Sayyidunā Fārūq-e-A’ẓam has said, ‘Allah  dislikes a fat intellectual man.’  (Al-Jū’-ma’- Mawsū’aĥ Ibn-e Abī Dunyā, vol. 4, pp. 94, Ḥadīš 81) This  is  due  to  the
fact  that  obesity  implies  carelessness  and  overeating  which  is
